Ever since it's release in 2013 and it's upgrade in 2015 Adidas' BOOST technology has changed the way people look at the company's footwear. Adidas uses a material called thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to create it's BOOST products that had never been used in the footwear industry before Adidas. They solved a problem that runners were facing for years, to go for a shoe with soft or responsive cushioning.

Creating the midsole from the material however was no easy task because the application of adhesive was not giving Adidas the desired results. Through a collaboration with BASF, the largest chemical producer in the world who happen to also be based out of Germany, Adidas was able to produce the midsole using a hot steam process that was able to harness the potential of the material in an effective way.

"Adidas helps make athletes better. With our new Boost foam, we are addressing a fundamental insight: everyone wants more energy. Whether you're running a marathon, training for an upcoming season or just trying to get back in shape, our revolutionary Boost cushioning foam provides the highest energy return in any running products," says Eric Liedtke, Head of Sport Performance, "Energy Boost will reset the running industry and pave the way for all future performance footwear."

Soft and responsive cushioning which is present in the BOOST is the perfect mix to produce comfortable running with a high energy return. For those uninitiated into the world of technical running, energy return is a simple yet overlooked aspect of picking shoes to run in. Energy return is the percentage of energy you get back from your input energy. While traditional EVA foam manages to produce an energy return of between 50 to 60 percent, Adidas BOOST manages an even higher return.

After trying out the PureBoost ZG at a run organised by Adidas it was clear that there is definitely an increase in comfort and it did feel like there was an increased energy return when compared to my regular sneakers. While running with BOOST, I noticed an increase of my overall performance at the run in comparison to what I had anticipated. We will be reviewing how this technology applied to other fields besides running to test if this technology is as effective in other domains.
