An adult webcam site is claiming to be the first of its kind to use facial recognition technology to help users “find a live sex doppelganger of someone you know”

MegaCams lets users upload a head shot (taken straight on) of anyone and then attempts to match the user with camgirls with as similar a look as possible. “This way it feels like you are having live sex with the person in your picture,” the Belgian company behind the website said in an announcement. The aim is to let customers conveniently find a doppelganger of their celebrity crush/creep obsession without having to manually trawl through the database of more than 180,000 performers. Ideally, you can expect to receive emailed results within a few minutes, though that time can vary depending on server load.

While MegaCams isn’t saying where the technology comes from, TechCrunch reports the API at work belongs to Microsoft. Specifically, the report indicates it might be Face API, part of Microsoft’s Cognitive Services suite of developer APIs. Face API’s pricing scheme allows developers 30,000 free uses each month (one image processed for facial recognition is one use) and US $1.50 for every batch of 1,000 uses thereafter.

According to TechCrunch’s Natasha Lomas (again, you can read her story here) MegaCams facial recognition is not particularly accurate. She reports that the links to camgirls emailed to her only had about a 40 percent likeness on average (that percentage provided by MegaCams’ own tool). However, that’s likely due to the fact that the facial recognition only pulls from the 3,000 to 5,000 performers online at a time, and not the full database.

But even inaccurate as it may seem, MegaCams does call into question the ethics of said use of the technology. In a statements to The Verge, spokesperson Eddy L claimed the tool is harmless, merely taking the in-your-head fantasy involving someone you know to a different level. The end result, however, is clear as day.

Plenty of independent “artists” are already adept at creating animated porn based off 3D models of popular game characters. In addition, we already have a bunch of tools that help to turn photographs into 3D models. It’s only a matter of time before those two are combined to make pornography of people who have never ventured into the field. The first targets will of course be celebrities, but then you can be sure it’ll be followed up with strangers and revenge porn.

And if there’s anything porn is, it’s reliable. You can count on it making use of every bit of technology and content matter available, and one day that’s going to be a website that lets you upload a stranger’s photo for a fee and turn it into a personalised virtual sex doll.
