It is often said that ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin takes wickets on helpful turning pitches and not on other surfaces. Critics also show his 182 Tests at 22.20 at home as against 67 scalps at 33.23 away to prove their point.
On Saturday, the third day of the only Test against Bangladesh here, Ashwin bowled 24 overs, gave away 77 runs and was rewarded only once, that too an irresponsible shot by Shakib Al Hasan.
While Shakib took the attack to Ashwin early, Mushfiqur Rahim and later Mehedi Hasan were not troubled by the Tamil Nadu off-spinner.

Compared with Ashwin, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was more effective, though he did not take more than just the wicket of Sabbir Rahman, trapping him in front.
Bangar explained: "Our bowlers have been doing really well. Even in the last series, we were able to get the opposition out at a reasonable score. I think our bowling has been going really well and those were good wickets. So, I don't find merit in that fact."
About the spinners and pacers complementing each other, Bangar said: "You need to give a lot of credit to how the captain thinks and how Anil (Kumble, chief coach) thinks about it. It's very important that the bowling unit is developed in such a fashion that even when India tours overseas, spinners will have to play a particular role and role reverses for seamers when they play in India.
"Generally, the role of a stock bowler is to give breakthroughs at the right moment. Spinners do that role when they go overseas. The roles get reversed as per situation. You need develop bowling attack that give you result in all conditions. You show faith in quicker bowlers."
Bangar said Umesh Yadav, who has picked up 2/72 in 18 overs so far, as the "most improved bowler" in the last year and a half. "All our three seamers were able to get reverse swing. But more so Umesh, with his pace and the lengths that he bowled. Bhuvi can bowl the conventional swing. But Umesh can swing it both ways. Ishant's bowls slightly back of a length. Umesh's length allows him to swing the ball with the new ball and also with the old ball. He's worked a lot on his wrist positions and balance at the crease," said Bangar.
