Playing for the country is a dream of every budding cricketer. And for this Maharashtra seamer, he was just a step away from realising this dream. But before he could board the plane and be part of India’s under-19 World Cup squad, his dream was shattered.

Mohsin Sayyed, a promising fast bowler and rated as one of the best in the 50-over format, was diagnosed with dengue just a couple of days before the team left for the ongoing championship in Australia. Mohsin will never forget August 1 when the doctor informed the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) about his illness. It is for the first time ever that two players from the state — Vijay Zol and Moshin Sayyed — were picked for the team under-19 team.

“I do miss playing in the tournament and it used to hurt watching the team in action initially when I was in the bed. But it has been over 15 days and I have recovered both from the sickness and the emotion. All I want now is the team to win,” said the 16-year-old from Osmanabad while talking to DNA on the sidelines of his workout at Solaris Gym in Koregaon Park on Friday.  “I will get chances in the future to make it to the team,” he added.

It was just not Mohsin’s family members who were hurt when they heard about the fever. The MCA and the people concerned were concerned too. Former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also mentioned during one of the India’s matches at the World Cup that India did miss the services of Mohsin.
Mohsin did go through a tough time during the first 10 days of his illness. However, he overcame it with the support of the entire team members and the MCA. Vijay Zol in particular used to call him everyday asking about his health.

“I keep in touch with the team and Vijay, who has been calling me regularly,” said Mohsin, who is optimistic about the team’s chances in this edition of the championship.

“It is our fourth time in the final in this format and the first against Australia, but I am sure we will win,” he added.
