‘Fab’ulous workshop

Also, art educationist Shital Mehta will be conducting a collage-making workshop along with her architect and ecology consultant daughter Lahar. The focus of the workshop will be to make children aware about the different aspects of the environment — air, water and earth. The idea is to let children understand how painful the act of destruction is — a thought-provoking experience. The workshop will be conducted on Saturday from 2pm to 4.30 pm. Clean Ghatkopar
Trains are the lifeline of the city and railway stations often bear the wear-and-tear of thousands of feet that walk on them daily. The Mumbai CSR Forum of NASSCOM Foundation will be cleaning up Ghatkopar railway station as their way of celebrating World Environment Day.
The clean-up drive is planned as the first campaign to sensitise citizens and railway passengers about the necessity and pressing need to take pride in our infrastructure. Ghatkopar station was selected due to its proximity to most participating IT-BPO companies. The two-hour clean-up drive will begin at 10am and will be carried out by over 100 volunteers from InfrasoftTech, Pangea3, Tata Consultancy Services, Tricom Information and Technology, WNS Global Services and Zenith Computers.

Sweeping moves
The June heat may be killing, but that has not deterred the residents of Bandra to do their bit for the environment. Around 100 of them gathered at the Carter Road promenade to clean up the beach with their own hands as they dropped in for their late afternoon stroll. “Saturday is a holiday and there are too many programmes happening on that day. We thought we will be better if we do it a day early,” said Vinod Shetty, resident of Bandra and member, Acron Foundation (India), that initiated the idea and would be participating.

The group also roped in the American Centre, Mumbai and the local corporator, along with residents. “The idea was to help them in the clean-up drive. They first wanted to do Chimbai beach but that is way too dirty. So we decided to stick to Carter Road and arranged for a dumper for the garbage to be collected,” said Zakaria.

“The idea is to also create respect for people who clean up the beach. When people will pick up garbage  with their own hands, they will realise what it takes to do the job as livelihood,” added Shetty.
