Shama Ansari was disappointed at not seeing her name in the commerce merit list on Thursday at a reputed college where the cut-off was well above her 84.30%. Puja Haldankar, who also applied at one college, failed to make the cut with 75.69%. “I belong to OBC category and thought I’ll get through this college in the second round as OBC cut-off had closed at 77% in the last list,” she said.

Even as colleges displayed the merit list of the second round of admissions on Thursday, students who had applied to select colleges found themselves without a seat as cut-offs remained high at top colleges. Despite scoring 44% in SSC, Navin Betwala applied to only eight colleges and now is without a seat.

At Ruparel College, where science and commerce have 12 vacancies each, the science cut-off was 93.79%, while it was 88.83% for commerce. “Commerce cut-offs remained the same and was less by just one mark, while it reduced by 0.5% in science from the last merit list,” said Ruparel College principal Pradeep Kulkarni.

While colleges have been asked to submit vacancies on July 28, the office of the deputy director of education may again put out a list of vacancies next week.

Shekhar Adsule (name changed), whose son got 78.61% said the education department should also have kept second and third merit lists in the second round to give low scorers a chance.
