The police registered a complaint against Chhota Rajan and two others on Sunday for threatening a few RPI activists in Chembur.

They were threatened over the phone that they should not campaign for Deepak Nikhalje, Rajan’s brother. If the case is proved, it will be the first time that the Rajan family feud would become public.

Between September 14 and 29, Ramesh Gopinath Ghokshe, 58, of Chembur and a few other RPI supporters received calls on their mobile phones, police said. They were told to support Congress leader Chandrakant Handore instead of Nikhalje in the coming elections. Nikhalje is fighting on a RPI ticket from the Chembur constituency.

“Three to four calls were made from international numbers. We are trying to trace the country from which the calls were made or if they were routed through VOIP system,” an officer said. The police have not ruled out the possibility of prank calls.

“We received an application three days ago from RPI supporters complaining about threat calls,” senior inspector B Pachundkar said.

“After investigation, an FIR was registered against Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan, Mahesh Londe, and an unknown person.”
