With the suspension of two IAS officials and one opting to go on a long leave, the strength of the cadre in the state has reduced to 286 against the sanctioned posts of 350. For the first time in the state’s history, the percentage of serving IAS officers has fallen to nearly 80% of the sanctioned posts.

The state government recently suspended principal secretary Jairaj Phatak and secretary Pradeep Vyas for their alleged involvement in the Adarsh scam. Another IAS officer V Radha, who has been director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, has opted for a long leave and will be back only after a year. She opted to go on leave following clashes with school education minister Rajendra Darda.

The number of IAS officers reduced to an all-time low due to large number of retirements this year. Adding to this, former labour secretary Kavita Gupta and 1999-batch officers Autl Patne and Anshu Sinha have been transferred. Nearly seven major departments and government controlled corporations, including industries, protocol, general administration, relief and rehabilitation, have been left leaderless due to the shortage of officers. To resolve with the shortage of the IAS officers, the state government has been following up with the Centre with the demand to release 15 officers instead of 7 to 8 released every year. “We have proposed promotion of 9 deputy collectors as IAS officials,” said an officer.

The differences between officers and politicians led to two officers opting for transfer. Additional chief secretary JS Saharia had requested for a transfer from the relief and rehabilitation department citing ill-treatment by minister Patangrao Kadam. Similarly, V Radha opted for leave after her differences with education minister Rajendra Darda.
