The varsity has handed over the redevelopment plan of the 245-acres of campus on priority basis to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Soon, the students of the University of Mumbai (MU) will be seeing technologically equipped and eco-friendly structures in the Kalina campus. The varsity has handed over the redevelopment plan of the 245-acres of campus on priority basis to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
As per officials at the MU, the redevelopment will be conducted in phases. The first phase will be all facilities related to students. "This phase will cover all the aspects that concerns and are related to the students in the campus or university. It includes existing and new student hostels, department renovation, dilapidated or old building structure that will undergo restoration," a top official told DNA. Furthermore, in phase two, it will cover teachers and remaining development.
Mentioning about the provisions these developments will provide the students, officials claim to create technologically advanced structures inside-out. "The Green Technology building is one of a kind (located at Kalina campus). We aim to create a similar structure with the latest technology that includes incubation centres, automation and other sustainable facilities," one official added. It is said that all the new structures or every structure after development, will be equipped with solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and waste management systems. New staff and teachers' quarters are included in the plan.
Iconic and old buildings like Ranade Bhavan, Lokmanya Tilak Bhavan and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Bhavan (also popularly called as Examination House) are some of the buildings which will go under redevelopment.
"The old buildings which need a little bit of repair work will be simultaneously done. In no way, any building will be demolished or scrapped but it will be simply renovated in order to prevent any threat to the students," the official added.
