After enlisting public support to plant two crore trees in the district, Thane district collector Dr Mahendra Kalyankar has now come up with an idea to improve the standard of education there. He has asked officials of the district collectorate as well as zilla parishad to adopt 2,000 schools in the district and look into their welfare.

Besides doing their regular jobs, the officials of Thane collectorate thus have an opportunity to raise the standard of education in the district. They will now be involved hands-on with schools in the district and contribute to the latter's betterment. "The officials of the zilla parishad and revenue department of the collectorate will be a part of this initiative," said Anniruddha Sahastrabuddhe.

The officials will visit their adopted schools once a week and spend time with the students and teachers. They will be there from the morning/afternoon prayers to the tiffin break, monitoring the quality of education imparted, getting to know the students and teachers' problems and searching for solutions for the same.

"Along with getting to know the problems of those present, the officials will also teach the students. With direct involvement from the officials, we are hoping to improve the quality of education given in our schools," Sahastrabuddhe said.

Moreover, a vocational training centre will also be started later to impart training in various fields. The collectorate is also in the process of enlisting support from private partners through corporate social responsibility initiatives.

After Kalyankar took over as the Thane district collector in the month of May, this is his second initiative to engage with the public. On World Environment Day on June 5, he had announced a massive plantation drive of two crore trees across the region in a single day in the month of July 2016 through public and private participation. The collectorate itself aims to plant 1.5 lakh trees on that day.
