Animal rights activists are up in arms against the management of a Mulund-based school after the parents complained about a teacher allegedly killing a snake in front of the students, burning it and then dumping it in a garbage bin.

According to Sunish Kunju, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Mumbai, some parents from Vani Vidyalaya School in Mulund west complained to him about the incident that occurred on Wednesday. "According to parents there have been previous incidents too wherein a snake entered the school premises but the school management did not take any action nor contact any snake rescue NGOs for consultation. On Wednesday a few snakes were spotted and one of the teachers not only killed but even burnt one," said Kunju, adding that he visited the school's premises on Thursday afternoon and found the snake's burnt carcass and immediately informed the Thane territorial forest department.

As per Kunju, the snake was a non-venomous rat snake and since killing of a wildlife animal is a crime, the forest department needs to investigate further to find out the offender and ensure action is taken. Kunju is planning to meet the school's management on Friday along with some parents of students from the school.

A parent told DNA that a year back there was a snake that had come inside the school and it has happened again, "We have been demanding to meet the school management and yet no one is ready to meet us. Now some of the parents have decided to gather on Friday."

Range Forest Officer (RFO) Santosh Kank from Thane forest department said that killing any wildlife is a crime under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. "We have received information about this incident and will be sending our staff tommorrow for carrying out further investigation," he said.
