Maharashtra University of Health Science (MUHS) has asked all state medical colleges to obtain grade tag from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This tag will help improve the quality of education.

Currently, the NAAC affiliation is compulsory for engineering and traditional colleges in the country. Due to this affiliation, now the medical colleges will have to upgrade their performance to get good gradation from NAAC. However, gradation will be given for a five-year period.

The NAAC gradation system was started after a human resource department directive ten years ago. Across the state, there are 311 medical colleges affiliated with MUHS, including private and government colleges. These colleges have to undergo this process as early as possible to get NAAC tag.

Soon, people will see the medical colleges put up the grade they have been awarded by the NAAC on their board. It will reflect the efficiency of college, how good the college is in all the aspects. It will mandatory for all the colleges to mention the grade in their brochures too. On the basis of this gradation, student will able choose in which college he/she wants to take admission. The ranking will reflect the standard and quality of education.

“We have recently taken this decision in a council meeting. The NAAC grade will be compulsory for all the colleges, resulting in improved standards and quality. Student will able to get an idea of how good a medical college is on the basis of gradation.  We have even discussed procedure how to obtain NAAC grade from the officials,” said Dr Arun Jamkar, Vice Chancellor, MUHS.

As per NAAC norms, a team of three experts from outside will spends two days in the college they are to inspect and grade. The team will inspect the college infrastructure and what kind of academic activities and research work is being carried out. The teaching strength, extra curricular and alumni activities will also be observed. After looking all these aspects, gradation will be awarded within three month by NAAC.

According to sources, now private medical colleges will have to maintain their quality and also appoint full time staff. “As these were the main lacunae in most of the medical colleges, they have to enhance their quality to match the prescribed standard. Only then, will they be eligible to obtain a good grade,” he said.

“If MUHS wanted the medical colleges to seek NAAC affiliation, it is not a bad sign as due to this, a poorly run medical college can improve its quality by initiating corrective measures” said Dr Ravi Rananavre, dean, Topiwala National Medical College.
