Navi Mumbai has been declared as one among the cleanest cities in the country and ranks seventh in the overall list as against its ninth rank the previous year. It has emerged as the cleanest city in the state in the 10 lakh plus population category. The city scored 4128.85 out of 5000 points.

Navi Mumbai has also been adjudged cleanest city under the citizens' feedback category across the country in 10 lakh plus population category. The city scored 1079 based on citizens' feedback through Swachhta App. Around 4237 cities across the country had participated in the survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing Affair and Urban Affairs (MOHUA).

It's focus on open defecation problem and waste management has improved the rating for Navi Mumbai. This year, the central government had introduced start rating ODF++. Under the rating system, the focus was on making the cities garbage free on a sustainable basis. Similarly, ODF+ and ODF++ guidelines were formed to make open defecation free status sustainable and ensuring behavioral change. In both, Navi Mumbai showed progress.

The city had to choose from one star to five stars, and progress accordingly. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) aimed for a three-star rating which was accepted by the central government's team after the visit. It received ODF++ rating following the survey.

NMMC had conducted a number of awareness programmes — from street plays to citizens' rally. Giving the credit to citizens of Navi Mumbai, DR Ramaswami N, municipal commissioner of NMMC said that without their contribution the city could not have earned the rank. "Improvement in the ranking can also be attributed to public representatives, citizens, officials and staffs of the solid waste department," added Ramaswami.

Jaywant Sutar, Mayor of NMMC said that the civic body has received a number accolades in the past. "This has added another feather in the cap for which every citizen deserves a praise," said Sutar.
