The Nariman Point Association (NPA) on Wednesday asked the BMC to consider the Nariman Point makeover plan prepared by architect Hafeez Contractor. The demand was made at the fourth award function for ‘Outstanding efforts of best maintained premises’ in the Nariman Point area, which was attended by additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta.

“There were two plans submitted and our preference is for the plan submitted by architect Hafeez contractor,” said NPA chairperson Madhubhai Vakharia. However, NPA honorary secretary Dr Earnest John II said, “Though our chairperson has liked Contractor’s design more, we are not against any other plan per se. We want the best of both PK Das and Contractor’s plan to be implemented.”

To this, Gupta said he was not sure if if Das’s plan had been approved. “If it has, there is no question of considering Contractor’s plan. But if it has not been, we will study it also. Conceptually, both look very different as of now. We may take ideas from both.”

The association on the other hand gave away awards to three buildings for improving and taking initiatives towards further greenery, security, fire-fighting system, lobby, polite staff and water conservation system. The idea is to keep the Nariman Point green and beautiful.

The first prize went to Hoeschst House, followed by Earnest House and Chander Mukhi second place and Embassy Center third place. Bakhtawar building got the ‘special award’ as it stood several notches ahead of the rest of the buildings and was topping the list every year. “In the last three years, we have taken several measures to improve the entire look of the building. We have spent around Rs12 crorein the same time on CCTV, advanced fire-fighting system, and are now working on the rain-water harvesting,” said SP Kanwar, chairperson of the Hooeschst House.

Dean John of the Earnest House said, “Our efforts were mainly focused on security and polite staff along with the lobby. We took major steps in improving the lobby area and the look of every floor.”
