One thing that Mumbaikar always dream of is space to park vehicles and congestion free roads on which one can ride without jostling clutch and brake. There are already 35 lakh vehicles on the roads of Mumbai. Making things worse are the auto rickshaws and taxis on road who cry foul over disappearing parking stands. This in turn is creating traffic jams and double parking. One of the most important things that the government should prioritize is to create more space for vehicles for parking.

The black and yellow cabbies had over 3000 stands for their parking each having a capacity of at least 5-7 taxis for their fleet of 42000-odd taxis. However now these stands have been removed for works of ongoing Metro rail across the city. The unions claim that the island city had several such stands namely at Grant Road, Jacob Circle, Mahalaxmi, Jijamata Nagar, Worli etc.

"There is no parking space available. Plus the drivers do not have place to rest, address nature's call etc. All these stands have been eliminated by the ongoing work on road. That is the reason why people too do not get taxis easily as these cabs aren't standing at one location," said AL Quadros, senior taxi union leader from Mumbai Taximen's Union.

They end up double parking leading to fines that the Mumbai Traffic Police collect. The auto rickshaws on road are bigger menace. There are over 2.06 lakh black and yellow auto rickshaws registered in the four RTOs of Mumbai, an increase of over 58 percent. Both Western and Eastern suburbs end up facing the brunt of these autos parked haphazardly on road, especially near railway stations and residential colonies.

"There has been an increase in number of autos but hardly any parking stands. They are fined through e-challan for various offences. Already the cost of vehicle, maintenance cost and fuel costs have risen and we haven't got a fare hike since 2015," said Thampi Kurien, auto rickshaw union leader.

Manifesto Suggestions

1. Provide parking lots for taxis and autos.
2. Create mobile app for passengers to book autos and taxis.
3. Control the number of autos and taxis registered.
4. More share-autos and share-taxis for faster movement of passengers from railway stations.
