Mumbai: BMC to resume road reconstruction, resurfacing from October 10

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start reconstruction and resurfacing of 1,343 roads in city of 507-kilometre length from next week, after getting permissions from the traffic department. 

Senior official from the BMC's road department confirmed that they are expecting permissions from the traffic department before October 10.

Earlier, the civic body had planned to resume road reconstruction and resurfacing from October 1. However, due to delay in getting permissions from the traffic department, the work could not be started.

According to an official from the Road department, work will be carried out in phases. "There are a total of 1,343 road works; these include 719 roads, work on which were put on hold during monsoon. The length of these 719 roads is around 305 kilometre," said the official.

The tendering process for 624 works for 202.31-km roads is already completed. However, work of remaining 719 works for roads would start in some time.

Of 624 km road works, reconstruction and resurfacing for 46 km road will be done in 199 roads in the city while 47 km in 155 roads in Eastern Suburbs and 108 km in 270 roads in the western suburbs. 

According to official, they will ensure that quality work is done. "We have taken a number of measures to fix the accountability on the contractors. We will ensure that there would be no irregularities," said the official.

In addition, part from 1343 road works, around 1,31,800 sq metre area of junctions work also be carried out. The civic body has set a budget of Rs 1,508 crore for the entire resurfacing and reconstruction works, the official said.

In the last two years, the civic body has had completed the works on 552-km roads during October 1, 2016 to May 2018.

Of 305 kn road woks in 719 roads which were put on hold during monsoon, there are 238 km is under the Defect Liability Period for three years. A defect liability period is a set period of time after a construction project has been completed during which a contractor has repair defects if crop up.

The senior said that new road work has been put under the project roads while others are under priority road two.
