Finally the wait is over for Mumbaikars. South bound Kherwadi flyover will be inaugurated on Sunday only to open for motorists Monday onwards. With the opening of this bridge, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will also lay foundation stone for Bandra Kurla Complex-Chunabhatti Connector project.

"On Sunday morning Chief Minister will inaugurate Kherwadi bridge that is under construction since November now. This bridge is last of the pair of the flyovers that was to be constructed over Kherwadi Junction at Bandra on Western Express Highway," said an Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official.

During morning and evening rush hours, nearly 5,000 vehicles cross this junction every hour. This 580-meter long bridge is one of the fastest constructed flyovers of Mumbai. Usually it takes over a year for authorities to complete such a civil structure.

From Monday onwards, Kherwadi flyover will ease motoring experience of road commuters as during the construction stage they had to wait in bumper-to-bumper traffic for nearly half an hour to clear the junction.

On Sunday morning, Fadnavis will head to Bandra Kurla Complex for bhoomipujan of BKC-Chunabhatti Connector project.

In mid-February, MMRDA had issued work order for the project but work did not commence as foundation stone laying ceremony was to be conducted by a politician. On June 16 last year construction of this 1.6-km long bridge was awarded.

As per the initial plans, the bridge was to be a cable-stayed structure over Mithi River to avoid any construction of pillar on the river, but the design has been revised and a pillar would be constructed on the river, thereby needing CRZ clearance. The estimated price of the project is Rs 203 crore.

The idea behind the project is to improve connectivity of Bandra Kurla Complex for commuters and motorists travelling from and to the eastern suburbs. Eventually, it will further reduce traffic congestion at Kalanagar and Sion-Dharavi Link Road. After the Santacruz Chembur Link Road was opened for traffic, there has been some reduction in traffic on Sion-Dharavi Link Road and Kalanagar.
