With only a month left for the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) elections, while everyone was gearing up with their propaganda, the chief minister announced that the 27 villages, that were recently included within the jurisdiction of the KDMC, will now be excluded and soon a separate civic body consisting of these villages should be formed.

On June 1 these villages were included as part of the KDMC, but the sudden decision to remove them from the KDMC jurisdiction has been taken by the state government has raised doubts about the Shiv Sena-Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) coalition. As the Shiv Sena were not aware of this move taken when the elections are drawing close, it has led to a lot of speculations.

These 27 villages had made a Sangharsh Samiti, to resolve their issues and ensure that their demands are met. "We have been deprived of good roads, toilets, water, proper drainage system and electricity facilities, since the last 20 years. In spite of being a part of the municipal corporation, we have not been getting these basic facilities and hence, we have been banning elections since the last few years. We have also not paid any property or water tax, as we have not received the facilities which every citizen is entitled to. Even after we were a part of the KDMC, many of our demands and basic facilities were not met," said Gulab Vaze, member of the Sangharsh Samiti.

This organisation had approached the chief minister, requesting for a separate civic body, as they were no more keen on being a part of the KDMC. As per their wish, the state government sent a letter on Monday to the KDMC.

Meanwhile, the KDMC had been taking various measures to meet the demands of these villages.

"When they were included within the KDMC, all members of the gram panchayat had asked for employment, within the KDMC. In the last four months, provisions were made for around 500 villagers to be employed with the civic body, letters were also sent to the villagers to join from September 10. But on Monday, we received the orders from the chief minister's office," said an official within the KDMC, on condition of anonymity.

In the year 2002, these 27 villages were removed from the jurisdiction of the KDMC. Ever since then, they have a separate gram panchayat. These villagers have been facing many problems and had refused to cast their vote for all these years. But, last year the KDMC lured them into casting their vote by promising to resolve these issues and true to their word, these 27 villages were roped in under the jurisdiction of the KDMC, until the recent decision.
