Deoband issued fatwa against Zakir Naik years ago

In response to another question about Naik, Darul Ifta responds, "The statements made by Dr Zakir Naik indicate that he is a preacher of Ghair Muqallidin, he is of free mind and does not wear Islamic dress. One should not rely upon his speeches."

World renowned Islamic seminary Darul Uloom, Deoband (Saharanpur), had issued a fatwa against controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik several years ago, saying he was misleading common Muslims and that members of the community should not follow his teachings.

"He is an agent of Ghair Muqallideen (one who does not believe in any faith), away from knowledge and wisdom, spreading mischievous thoughts and misguiding simple Muslims to wrong path," says a fatwa posted on the website of Darul Ifta, the section of the seminary that issues fatwas or edicts in response to people's questions.

In response to another question about Naik, Darul Ifta responds, "The statements made by Dr Zakir Naik indicate that he is a preacher of Ghair Muqallidin, he is of free mind and does not wear Islamic dress. One should not rely upon his speeches."

In the words of Deobandi mufti Ibrahim Desai, "Zakir Naik is known for discussions on comparative religions. He is not a qualified Aalim (scholar) of deen (faith). His comments on fiqh (teachings of the Quran) have no merit. If it is true that he condemned the fiqh of the Imams, then that in itself is a clear indication of his lack of fiqh and understanding of Shariah (Islamic law). We have come across a fatwa from Darul Ifta Jamia Binnoria, regarding Zakir Naik not being a certified Aalim of Deen. He should consult with Ulama in his endeavour of propagating deen."

Apart from creating a raging controversy, Naik's utterances also seem to have divided the clerics. While prominent Shia cleric Kalbe Jawad says Naik is inciting young Muslims with his speeches that should be banned, Sunni Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali says if such speeches are made punishable under law, then several political leaders would land behind bars, too.

Interestingly, both clerics are members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. Maulana Jawad has demanded a complete ban on the media, books and speeches of Naik. "Naik has openly praised Mullah Umar and Osama Bin Laden in his speeches. On his channel, he openly incites Muslim youth against non-Muslims," Jawad said, saying Naik's speeches were "dangerous" and should be banned.

Maulana Firangi Mahali, however, blames the media for "character assassination" of a man who has the largest number of followers among all Indian Muslim preachers.

Firangi Mahali said it was not advisable to take the views of a confirmed terrorist (Bangladeshi attacker) and hound a scholar (Naik) only because the attacker was "inspired" by his speeches.

"He has a following of 14 million people. If one of them puts the blame of his terrorist activity on Naik, will the 14 million others be also booked for the same?" Mahali said. He also raised questions on why Naik's view of IS being "anti-Islamic state of Iraq and Syria" was not being taken into account.
