The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suspended 20 teachers, including four principals, from its schools for not being present in school and not showing any progress in the education of their students. The civic body's Public Relations Officer issues the list of suspended teachers on Thursday
While all of the 16 teachers were absent from school in 2014, some of them were absent in 2015, while others between 2016-17, till date. One of the principals has remained absent from 2015 to date. In addition to their absence, two principals were suspended for the poor quality of education in their schools. The fourth principal was suspended for misbehaving with a female student. He proposed to her, which was first reported by DNA on March 4. One of the suspended teachers forged her attendance on the biometric machine by recording it on a machine installed in a BMC office close to her residence instead of the school she was enrolled at.
An official from the BMC's education department, on the condition of anonymity, said, "We have caught the teacher who forged her attendance. Students from the school raised the issue. Other teachers were absent from school despite taking salaries." The official added, "Some teachers are from regional language schools like Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati medium and some are from Mumbai Public School which are BMC's English-medium schools."
