With elections coming up, pillars of Metro rail, flyovers and Monorail will become lucrative spots for posting political banners. In a bid to prevent this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be converting these pillars into vertical gardens. According to the sources BMC will decide this month end.

At present work on various elevated Metro rail lines is underway which has pillars supporting them. These are seen on routes of Metro-7 Dahisar (E), Andheri (E), Metro-2A and 2B of Dahisar-DN Nagar and DN Nagar-Mandale, Metro 4 of Wadala-Kasarvadavli and Metro 6 of JVLR-Vikhroli. Apart from this, there is also Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line that is operational. Then there is Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle Monorail which is also commissioned for public.

"We are planning to have vertical gardens on pillars of these Metro rails and Monorail so as to beautify them," said an official from MMRDA. "This will also reduce chances of it getting spoiled from hoardings seen".

While the VAG Metro rail is already running 11 kms, work on other metro rail is underway for which pillars have already been raised. Apart from these, then there are the flyovers which are namely dumped by vehicles or if beautified by mini-gardens, it has been badly maintained. There are few areas below flyovers where proper gardens have been built and created.

These vertical gardens are expected to go up like creepers so that it gives a pleasant sight. Around 27,000 sq metres area under 23 flyovers across the city will see a green facelift apart from these Metros and Monorail. The total area is one fourth of the Oval ground. "We will develop garden between two pillars of the flyover while in some places, vertical garden has also been proposed," said a BMC official.

The official also informed that around 950 sq metre play area will also be developed beneath Santacruz- Chembur link road and an open gym at Mankhurd T-Junction. Apart from Mankhurd flyover, some other flyovers too get an open gym. Space beneath flyovers are mostly found occupied with parked vehicles or scrapped vehicles. With dust around it, it is also seen as security threat for people living around it. Dilip Kawatkar, Spokesperson, MMRDA said, " It is just a plan which is being worked out".
