The multi-agency teams sent out by Central Railway to audit railway stations in Mumbai have found that the resolution of CCTVs installed at these stations is very poor. Sources said the image pixelates and there is little clarity. Moreover, there is need for at least 194 improved version of CCTVs at railway stations on their network.

To begin with, railway officials said there are several shortcomings that these CCTVs have which is causing hindrance. Not only do these CCTVs produce grainy images, but the connectivity to the system is also poor. The report at several stations mentions the need to augment the number of CCTVs and its quality.

There are around 20 railway stations that are in need of more CCTVs on its premises to cover FOBs, subways and platforms. In fact on October 9, the Director General (DG) of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from the Railway Board had visited a few of the stations like Parel, Dadar, Kurla, Panvel and travelled inside local trains and made note of the situation.

Recently, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal promised that more CCTVs will be placed at railway stations. Also, every single coach of a local train will be covered by CCTVs in the next one year. Sources said this is one of the reasons why the DG visited Mumbai. "We are working towards getting more and better CCTVs into the system," said a senior railway official on condition of anonymity.

Some of the other problems that the CCTVs face is that the wires are exposed and hang precariously on platforms. In Navi Mumbai, the CCTVs are not functioning efficiently and even shut off during loadshedding.

The issue of coordination between different agencies is also plaguing the working of CCTVs.

JOINT INSPECTION

  • On Monday, the BMC and Railways carried out a joint inspection of FOBs falling under the civic body’s jurisdiction. During the visit, assistant commissioner of respective wards and officials from the bridge department were present.
