After a pause of five months, the Biometric attendance for employees in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will become mandatory from November 1. The decision has been taken during the monthly meeting of civic chiefs held on Saturday.

The Biometric attendance was stopped after complaints of technical glitches in the system and salary of many staff including that of doctors in the KEM Hospital was not being credited.

In March 2018, salaries of 4,500 medical staff of the KEM Hospital were affected due to glitches developed in the biometric system. Following this, nurses and paramedical staff of the hospital went on a strike that severely affected medical services. They demanded that attendance should not be made biometric.

Sudhir Naik, deputy municipal commissioner (General administration) said that from November 1, biometric attendance will be mandatory, and it would be linked with salaries. The civic body will provide one machine for every 20 staff and one machine will be kept for emergency if the installed one stops working.

Now, the head of department has to ensure right working hours of employees to be fed in the software. In case there is any error, the department head will be responsible.

In 2017, the BMC administration introduced biometric attendance which was opposed by the unions. However, the civic administration went ahead with its decision. Initially, it was found that employees had to stand in queue to mark attendance. There were instances when machine hanged due to continuous attendance.

After many employees faced salary cut despite they worked as they could not mark attendance in time. The reason included machine was not available in time, machine hanged or their finger could not be recognised.

A senior HR official informed that there were some who had genuine problem with finger prints in the biometric system, while some others were on outdoor or election duty.
