The Fashion and Design Promotion Council of India aims to be different, at least that's what Vijay Singh, secretary and CEO of FDPC says. To begin with there will be equal importance given  to cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

Vijay Singh says, "We will open an office in Mumbai at Prabhadevi in March, offices in other cities will follow. By creating a chapter/office and being very regional, we plan to create awareness and increase participation from that area." He further adds, "Mumbai and Delhi have always been at the centre of fashion. What we want is that designers from every region should be appreciated."

Singh explains the working of the council: The advisory team would consist of Kishore Biyani (president), Raghavendra Rathore (vice president), and Varsha Parekh (advisor and director of NIFT). Other portfolios to be taken charge of include: Development commissioner (handlooms), joint secretary (exports), ministry of textiles development commissioner (handicrafts) and executive director and export promotion council (handicrafts). But will so many heads, massacre the mission? Singh says, "So many prominent people on board would only fasten the process and the decision-making. We want every aspect of fashion to be equally recognised."

Singh says of his plan to create a democratic fashion industry, "The council has aid from the government but will not be bureaucratic in nature. The tenure of all the members on the board will be revised after three years if they are not performing, and they will not be elected. And why should they be?" He adds, "The government will provide financial aid, every year at least five young designers will be sent overseas to showcase their collection. A minimum of 30% aid is allotted for the young emerging designers." About fashion shows like those of other existing councils, Singh explains that the FDPC's aim as of now is to provide designers will retail assistance, especially pertaining to design innovation, marketing techniques, handlooms and handicrafts.

Vijay signs off on an ambitious note, he says, "What NASSCOM did for the Indian information industry, FDPC will do for the fashion industry."
