When creative minds are given an opportunity to work on a funky concept, it sure is a treat for the viewers. An interesting exhibition in the city will display chairs designed by artists as well as interior designers which are crafted out of wood, fibre, aluminum and other materials.

The concepts of the chairs are varied. Artist Pratap Morey has used a flight case to make his chair. He says, “A flight case is very tough in the exterior and is used to stock delicate things. I have worked on the same concept and designed a chair that is tough and rugged in the exterior. The seat is soft and comfortable.” The phrase ‘Fragile: Handle with care’ is embroidered on the cloth. Also, an image of the earth is engraved on the exteriors of the chair. Pratap adds, “The unique selling proposition of this chair is that it is compact. You can carry it with you wherever you want to.”

Artist Rahul Karankal’s chair is inspired by the tribal community of Kaskaris. He says, “These people are the inhabitants of a village near Wada in Maharashtra. And they live such a simple life that even the concept of a chair is unknown to them.” He adds, “My simple looking chair portrays their lifestyle. And the cloth that forms the seat is the cloth that they wear to cover themselves.”

Interior designer Rachana Kapoor has focused on the comfort aspect. “As an interior designer, that is what is of prime importance to me,” explains Archana. She adds, “I have designed a very cozy chair that will make you say ‘it is soft’. And that is the motive. The exterior of the chair is made of marble.”

And last but not the least, even Arzan Khambatta has designed a chair for the exhibition. He begins with a confession, “It is not a chair on which you can sit for long. It’s a chair that you can keep in the entrance of the office or your house. This chair is designed keeping in mind the contours of the body.”

The exhibition will begin at the Le Sutra gallery on April 12.
