It’s Christmas time. A time when everyone gets to play Santa Claus. You can choose from a range of goodies for gifting — the good old plum cake, chocolates, sweets, aromatic candles... the list is endless.

Anju Poddar, gifting consultant and owner of Nuggets, a gift company, says, “Any edible item makes for a good gift. It can never fail.” She says  gifting homemade plum cakes, chocolates and cookies is very common during this season. “I have seen teenage girls making cookies and gifting them to one another,” says Poddar, adding, that as this is a festive season, people want to indulge themselves.

Apart from edible items, candles, hampers and stockings filled with goodies are convenient gifts that can be prepared at home. “Children like Christmas trees; hence a small tree decorated with bells and candies serves as an ideal gift for them,” says Poddar.

She adds that the tree can be made attractive by decorating it with cotton balls and foam to give it that “Christmasy” look. Smita Pathak, who conducts hobby classes, says, “Handmade paper bags and ceramic candle stands are very popular as gift items during Christmas. Handmade Christmas cards are also a good gift idea.”

One can make ordinary aroma candles funkier by decorating them with flowers, writing messages on them or decorating them with beads. “Red flower candles are much in demand during Christmas,” says Poddar.

Apart from candles, another popular gift option is chocolates. A chocolate is a gift loved by young and old alike. Wilma Machado, who makes  chocolates at home, says, “Assorted chocolates such as kiwi, mint, hazelnut and coffee cream are very popular during Christmas.” One can buy assorted chocolates from Machado at Rs700 per kg.

Jolly Phillip prefers making sweets at home and gifts it to her neighbours, colleagues and friends. “I make plum cakes, nueris, jujubes and milk toffees and pack them in a decorative plate, complete with a satin bow,” says Phillip, who starts the preparations a week in advance.

Charlotte Creado also believes in gifting homemade Goan sweets such as doss — a coconut sweet, kalkal, cakes, marzipans and doughnuts. “It adds a personal touch to the gift,” she says.

So, instead of shopping for gifts, you can also make gifts at home and make Christmas special for your loved ones.
