With the implementation of the code of conduct in the state ahead of the assembly elections, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has started intensive checking of passengers and their belongings to find if any unwanted items like illegal cash are not transported.

The GRP has already made a major bust when it recovered over Rs 1.20 crore cash along with gold jewellery and two hundred quintals of silver being transported in one of the train.

On Wednesday, it made an unusual recovery when it found thirty-eight tortoises being transported in two bags in a train headed to Delhi. The cops have detained a woman in the matter.

According to officials, the GRP had received information from sources that some illegal item would be transported from a train, however, there was no information on the train in which the said items would be taken. “On receiving the information, the GRP team prepared for an intensive search in the trains. One after the other trains were checked and the belongings of the people were inspected. Sniffer dogs were also used for the purpose and in one of the trains plying between Jodhpur and Delhi, two plastic bags were seen with some movement in the object kept inside them. The passengers were asked about the bag and it came to light that the bags belonged to a woman who was identified as Sangeeta, a native of Delhi,” officials said.

It was when the bags were opened that the GRP sleuths received a shock. “Upon opening the bag, the officials found star tortoises in the bag. Since it is illegal for a wild animal to be captured and kept in such a way, the woman was questioned about the same and she was unable to give any reply for the same. Though she confessed getting the tortoises from Jodhpur she did not divulge where were they to be supplied. The woman was detained and the two bags were confiscated. Upon checking, 38 tortoises were found in total in the bags,” officials said.

The information was passed onto senior officials after which an investigation was initiated into the matter. “We are trying to find out if the woman has been involved in similar activities in the past as well or if she has a criminal record. We are also trying to find out as to where was she going to supply the reptiles. Further action in the matter is being taken,” officials said.
