A video has gone viral in which former home minister Gulab Chand Kataria can be seen spewing venom against ‘Love Jihad’ and a particular community. He decries the situation in Jaipur as one where Hindus are being prevented from worshiping in temples. The video shot in Kataria’s home district Udaipur comes at a time when BJP is gearing up for general elections and is clear indication that the party will further play the polarisarion card.

Congress has come down heavily on Kataria’s statement.

Kataria gave this controversial speech at a meet of BJP workers organised in the Parshvnath temple in Vallabhnagar in Udaipur on the occasion of new year. In the 3.49 minute video that has gone viral, Kataria, the two-time former home minister, made an impassioned appeal to the people of Udaipur to save their girls from ‘Love Jihad’ which he said is “an increasing problem in present times”.

Further elaborating on the issue, Kataria goes on to say, “Ensure that your city does not become like the walled city of Jaipur where Hindus cannot even pray in their temples.” This, he said, is due to a certain community’s interference.

Of the eight assembly seats in Jaipur city, BJP managed to win just two, while Congress won six - out of which two were Muslim candidates. The fact that Kataria has mentioned Jaipur, a saffron bastion that BJP lost in these elections, shows that BJP would further play the polarisation card.

His statement about Jaipur temples have invited ire of Congress. Over a hundred temples were demolished during the BJP regime.

“The party that demolished temples on a large scale in Jaipur is expressing concern for temples is quite surprising. It would befit Kataria Ji, who is a senior leader to not create a Hindu-Muslim divide in the society. He should instead focus on working towards the betterment and development of people,” said Mahesh Joshi, Congress MLA from Hawa Mahal seat in Jaipur.

Kataria has reasons to be upset with the minority community as he has not fared well electorally in the areas with Muslim population.
