The forts of Rajasthan have always been a part of history and are famous all over the globe. One such fort is the Kishangarh Fort, which is located just 145 km from the Indo-Pak border in Jaisalmer. But, due to its location and security concerns, tourist are not allowed to visit the fort which has resulted in its deterioration over the years.

It is said, before partition, the way to Pakistan and Afghanistan was via this phenomenal fort. Previously known as Deenugarh, this fort was built in the 18th century and had special significance. The fort was constructed with a mix of Mughal and Sindh styles, and that is why it is still standing strong in spite of lack of maintenance.

As per historians, the secret doors of Kishangarh came handy to the Indian Army during 1965 and 1971 wars. Later, the Border Security Force set up a military post near Kishangarh where hundreds of soldiers live.

“It was expected that the BSF could look after the fort but due to lack of time and resources, it could not happen and the fort is gradually losing its grandeur,” a local said. Locals fear that if the fort is not looked after properly in coming years, Kishangarh could soon become a part of the history.

On paper, this fort has been kept on the list of protected monuments but the reality speaks otherwise. In fact, to inspect Kishangarh Fort of Jaisalmer for adjudging it as a protected monument, a government team had paid a visit to the fort as well to prepare a report on the same, a local official said.

“On the basis of the report made by the inspection team, the government asked for objections by issuing a notification. In the absence of objections, the Department of Arts, Literature, Culture and Archeology, declared the Kishangarh fort, along with Ghotaru and Ganeshiya forts, a protected monument on November 22, 2011, on behalf of the state government,” the official added.

After being declared a protected monument, the local population had hoped it would bring about a transformation of the fort. But, the opposite has, in fact, happened, sources said. The fort has not been taken care of due to negligence, they added.
