Rohit Sharma ‘non selection’ for Australia tour – BCCI co-ordination with Mumbai Indians goes for a toss

Rohit Sharma was not picked in any of the squads for the upcoming tour of Australia after suffering an injury during Mumbai Indians’ game against Kings XI Punjab. However, after the squad was announced, Mumbai Indians’ Twitter handle put out a photo where he was training. The question is – Is there no communication between the BCCI and the IPL franchises?

When Mumbai Indians’ epic ‘double super over’ match against Kings XI Punjab ended, it was not Rohit Sharma who came out for the presentation. Kieron Pollard came in his place and he said that Rohit Sharma was unwell. The injury was serious enough for Rohit Sharma to miss the next couple of games against Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. On Monday, the BCCI selection panel met and announced all the three squads for India’s tour of Australia which would begin on November 27. Rohit Sharma’s name was not there in any of the squads. The BCCI released a press statement which said the Indian cricket board’s medical team will monitor the progress of Ishant Sharma and Rohit Sharma.

The confounding nature of the BCCI’s press release raised more questions. Was Rohit Sharma out of IPL 2020? To add to the confusion, Mumbai Indians’ official Twitter handle earlier released photos were Rohit Sharma was seen batting and practicing. It seemed to indicate that Rohit Sharma was on the path to recovery.

Thus, this is currently the situation. There is absolutely no clue whether Rohit Sharma is available for the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2020. The franchise and the BCCI are absolutely tight-lipped about it. There is no clarity on whether Rohit Sharma can be in the Indian team for Australia, with certain media reports claiming that Rohit Sharma can be picked whenever he is deemed fit. If that is the case, why is his name still not added to the probable squad in T20, Test or ODI?

No co-ordination

The confusion regarding the availability of Rohit Sharma indicates that there is absolutely zero co-ordination between the BCCI and the Mumbai Indians franchise. To play the devil’s advocate, maybe the bio-bubble environment IS causing some communication issues with the BCCI. However, was it a case of bad timing? Did Mumbai Indians franchise not have a clue that the BCCI selection committee is meeting to select the players to Australia? Highly unlikely.

In cricket, hand-eye co-ordination is extremely important for aggressive, confident batting. A mistimed shot can result in a dismissal. In this case, the co-ordination between BCCI and the Mumbai Indians has been so horribly mistimed that there is nothing but confusion. When it comes to BCCI and medical fitness, which might be NCA rehabilitation, that is another major faux-pas in itself. Just ask Wriddhiman Saha, whose career suffered a setback because of the dodgy handling of his injury both by the BCCI and the NCA.

We will never know what was the full nature of Rohit Sharma’s injury. We will never know how Rohit Sharma was suddenly included back in the side. We will never know how miraculously the injury healed prior to the IPL 2020 playoffs. For the BCCI, the Rohit Sharma injury is just another saga of confusion and poor timing.
