NASHIK: His interest and capability to excel in mathematics was first noticed by his teacher in fourth standard. Kedar Tatvawadi has come a long way since and has now won the gold medal at the International Olympiad in Astro-physics for the second consecutive year.

A student of standard 11, Kedar was one of the five members that represented India at the International Olympiad in Astro-physics held in Ukraine from September 29 to October 7. He won the gold, while his teammates bagged the silver and bronze. Kedar was also awarded the ‘Best Sky Gazer’.

In 2006, Kedar had represented India in the junior level of the Olympiad and had won the gold medal.  His inclination for mathematics became evident when his scholarship teacher pointed out his exceptional speed in solving problems in standard 4.

Kedar bagged the standard 7 scholarship and his foray into mathematics began to yield success in competitive exams with a gold medal in the Ganit Pradnya exam, 6th position at MTS in standard 8, 1st position at MTS in standard 9.

“I was so interested in math that I only studied the subject. I remember in standard 6 I had scored full marks in math but had failed in English. I never liked to study languages,” recollects Kedar.

Kedar started studying physics and astro-physics at the Aryabhatt Academy for competitive exams, where his guide and teacher provided him with books on the subject.

A family friend and sky gazer Hemant Adbal lent him his telescope and taught him to observe the sky. “My keenness in sky watching grew so much that I lost sleep. Finally my mom had to lock the terrace and put me to sleep,” says Kedar.

He also exhibits his brilliance in Hindustani classical music. He is the recipient of the music scholarship given by the central government.

During the preparation of the Olympiad, he resorted to his tanpura music. The Indian team had six members. All of them won medals; India bagged 3 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze.
