In a shocking incident, veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari was gunned down outside his Press Colony residence in Srinagar on Thursday.

Known as the ‘voice of sanity’ in restive Valley, Bukhari had survived three assassination attempts on previous occasions.

At present, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Rising Kashmir, a Srinagar-based newspaper. 

He had extensively worked with The Hindu and was Bureau Chief of the esteemed daily.

Recipient of World Press Institute USA fellowship, Bukhari had done his Masters in Journalism from Ateneo de Manila University, Manila as a fellow of Asian Centre for Journalism. 

Bukhari was also a fellow at East West Centre at USA’s Hawaii. 

According to information provided by Rising Kashmir website, Bukhari was an extensively travelled journalist, who used to write in English, Kashmiri Urdu. 

He was also the president of Adbee Markaz Kamraz, the biggest and oldest cultural and literary organization of Valley.
