Interested in bidding for a second-hand bike or car? Walk into the Vejalpur police station, where vehicles seized by the police over the past three years will be auctioned very soon.

An official of the Vejalpur police told DNA that people can buy these vehicles once they submit a tender, an initial deposit for the vehicle they wish to buy. The date of the auction has not been fixed yet, but will be declared soon, said the official.

A police official said, "Once the potential buyers submit the tender, he/she can participate in the bidding process. The highest bidder can take the vehicle home." The Vejalpur police have already published a notification asking owners of the vehicles, which have remained unclaimed for long, to stake their claim within 5 days.

As many as 24 vehicles will be auctioned by the police. Among the vehicles up for auction are Tata Sumo and a loading rickshaw. Officials said that depending on the vehicle, a cheque ranging from Rs25,000 to Rs1 lakh will have to be deposited with the police, following which the auction will be held.

"After the bidding process is initiated, there will be three bids; the vehicle will be sold to the highest bidder." However, officials said that the vehicle will be returned to the original owner if he/she stakes claim on the vehicle.

"It's not very often that we see an owner coming to claim the vehicle before the auction. However, in case the owner comes forward to buy it, the vehicle is returned to the person," an official said.

The good news is that potential buyers will be in a position to bid for a range of vehicles, starting from a Luna to a CBZ bike. Vejalpur police station PI MC Patel said, "Everything will be done according to rules. The rate at which the vehicles will be sold will be decided by a motor vehicles inspector."

According to the officials, the procedure to conduct the auction is quite long, and therefore such auctions are held rarely. A senior official said, "An order of the court needs to be obtained to auction the vehicles. The procedure to obtain such an order has to be initiated by the commissioner of police."
