Samajwadi Party's Naeemul Hasan on Thursday defeated his BJP rival by 6,211 votes in Uttar Pradesh's Noorpur assembly seat. Hasan was supported by the Congress, the Bahujan Samaj Part (BSP), Rashtriya Lok Dal(RLD) and the AAP. He defeated BJP's Avni Singh.

Noorpur was won by the BJP in 2017 assembly elections. The bypoll was necessitated after the death of sitting BJP MLA Lokendra Singh Chouhan. He was a two-time MLA from the seat. The BJP had reposed faith in Avani Singh, wife of late MLA Lokendra Chauhan while Akhileh Yadav-led party fielded Naeemul Hasan.

Bypoll for a Lok Sabha seat was also held in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana where RLD's Tabassum Hasan beat BJP's Mriganka Singh. Tabassum Hasan was supported by the Congress, Samajwadi Party and the BSP.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Mriganka Singh's father Hukum Singh of the BJP, necessitating the bypoll.

Polling for the high-stakes by-elections to the two constituencies was held on Monday. In Kairana, repolling was held at 73 polling stations yesterday.

In the recent by-elections held in the prestigious Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha constituencies, the ruling BJP had lost to the SP.

While Gorakhpur was represented by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adtiyanath, Phulpur was held by his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya. The by-elections were held as they vacated their seats on getting elected to the UP Legislative Council.
