Five days after a bovine protector was killed by cow smugglers in Haryana, activists have raised nearly Rs 30 lakh for the family of the deceased.

The volunteers chose to crowdfund their cause through a fund-raising portal and initially kept a target of Rs 20 lakh. As they achieved the goal in less than 14 hours, it was revised to Rs 30 lakh. Till Saturday evening, over 3,000 donors had contributed Rs 28.83 lakh.

Victim Gopal, who was a member of 'Gau Raksha Dal, was shot dead on July 30 while he was chasing a vehicle on a bike after being tipped off about cows being smuggled in it.

The campaigners for this fund-raising efforts include Ritu Rathaur, Madhur Singh, Aviral Sharma, Vikas Pandey, and Prashant Patel. "Yes the target was met, hence we increased the goal. It will take 15-20 days to get settled," said Pandey, who is a BJP volunteer as per his Twitter profile.

Pandey said they will make few long-term investments for the benefit of Gopal's two children and put some money in his mother's account. "We have to get her account opened too."

The campaigners posted a message on the portal, saying 35-year-old Gopal was a member of a local cattle protection group and he had on many occasions stopped smuggling of cows. On Monday night (29 July), the message read, Gopal was tipped off about a vehicle laden with stolen cows. Gopal decided to intercept the vehicle.

"As he was trying to catch up with the smugglers, they shot him and fled the scene. A gravely injured Gopal was then rushed to a nearby hospital but he later succumbed to his injuries." On Saturday, Pandey along with others met Gopal's family members.
