Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed hope that parties would use the Winter Session of Parliament to act in public interest instead of their own considerations with an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He also assured opposition parties that the government is willing at debate all issues.

PM Modi's remarks came in a short statement to the media as he reached Parliament House to take part in the beginning of the Winter Session on Parliament. The first day of the session was adjourned after observing a two-minute silence in homage to Union Minister Ananth Kumar, who died on November 12.

"The Winter Session of Parliament is important. Key legislative bills are pending, which are in the interest of the people of the India. I hope the proceedings will be smooth, and there will be frank as well as extensive debates among members," PM Modi said.

"I hope the productivity of the Winter Session is high. Let us strive to work hard and complete the legislative agenda pending. May national interest always prevail over party considerations," he added.

The Winter Session of Parliament will see both Houses go through 20 sitting spread out across 29 days. The session can be expected to get heated with the opposition gearing up to raise high-voltage issues like the Rafale deal, the war within the CBI and allegations of government interference in the functioning of the RBI.

PM Modi did not take any questions from reporters after delivering his short statement outside Parliament House. He also did not pass any comment on the results of the Assembly elections to five states, for which counting was underway.

The government had held an all-party meeting on Monday to discuss with opposition leaders ways to ensure Parliament functions smoothly.
