Counting for the by-elections for the 28 assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh is underway and the results will arrive on today (Tuesday). This by-election is important for the BJP's Shivraj Singh Chauhan government as well as the Congress.
For the 230-member assembly, if the Shivraj government is to remain in power, they will have to win at least 9 seats, while the Congress will have to win all 28 seats to return back to power. As per the initial trends, BJP is leading in more than 14 seats. In such a situation, Kamal Nath's dream of returning to power in Madhya Pradesh seems to be incomplete.
It may be recalled that BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the Congress in March this year and joined the BJP. Along with him, 22 Congress MLAs also left the Kamal Nath government. They all resigned from the membership of the assembly and joined the BJP. The Congress government in the state was reduced to a minority and Shivraj became the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for the fourth time. When the BJP came to power, Scindia ensured ministerial berths in the Shivraj government for the leaders who supported him. A total of 11 leaders of the Jyotiraditya Scindia camp became ministers in the Shivraj government.
Here is how the leaders of the Scindia camp are doing in the by-elections:
