TV mechanic Birju Rajak who earns Rs 250 per day and has Rs 8449.19 in his bank account, turned out to be the 'director' of five private limited companies.

DNA reported how Rajak had been sent a summon for transactions amounting to Rs 5.47 crore through his bank account. On Monday, 42-year-old Rajak was questioned for about five hours at the office of deputy director of Income Tax (investigation wing) Anurag S Daria.

IT officials said that prima facie it looked like Rajat had been a victim of fraud. “I can only say he looks like he has been a victim of a fraud. His identity proofs have allegedly been used by one Anand Modi to open several companies and a bank account through which transactions amounting to several crores have been done presumably to turn black money into white,” said a senior officer of the department.

After Rajak was sent a notice from the IT department for carrying out the transactions on behalf of Tricorn Developers Private Limited, officials said that they found out that between December 20, 2017 and March 29, 2018 Rajak had been made the director of five companies. The four other companies are Nightshine Vinimay Private Limited, Trieye Distributors Private Limited, Gainwell Promoters Private Limited and Eveningstar Marcom Private Limited.

After the questioning, Rajak, dressed in shabby jeans and T-shirt told DNA that he had no idea of any of the companies. “I have told the officers that I have not heard of the companies and I don’t even hold the ICICI bank account through which the transactions have taken place. I have only one bank account with Union Bank of India in which I have a balance of Rs 8449.19. That is all the money I have,” he said. He added that his mother, Hiramoni Rajak used to wash clothes of Modi, a resident of Howrah. Modi had asked Hiramoni to bring Aadhar Cards and other proofs of identity of Rajak, his wife and also of Hiramoni herself assuring that he would get their PAN card done, at his own expense. “I don’t know anything else after that,” he said.

He also said that after he received the letter of the IT department on Friday, he had been calling Modi since Saturday and he had been assuring Rajak that he had connections with the IT officials and he would take care with ease. “He had also repeatedly asked me not to go to the IT office but I was apprehensive because the summon had asked me to appear at their office within five days of the receipt of the letter,” Rajak told DNA. He said that the IT officials had been extremely polite with him. “I had told them that I work for Rs 250 a day and coming to office for a day would mean loss of pay. They had said that I would have to come to their office for some more days and have assured me unofficially that they would reimburse me the monetary loss that I incur,” he added. The call recordings between Rajak and Modi had been submitted to the IT department.

IT officials said that the next move would be to interrogate Modi and cross check the statement of Rajak.
