An eight-month-old boy, kidnapped from outer Delhi a week ago, was rescued from Bihar with the arrest of a "childless" 28-year-old driver, who had a strong desire to have a kid, police said today.

Akash was kidnapped allegedly by Anil Paswan from Raja Vihar residence of Rakesh and Rinki, the parents, when they had gone to market on May 13 leaving the child in the care of the accused.

Paswan, who shares the rented accommodation with Akash's parents, was married for sometime but did not have any child. He and his wife had a strong desire to have a child and this led him to kidnap Akash, police said.

"The couple had gone to the market and Paswan had assured them that he will take care of their son. When the couple returned, they found that Akash was kidnapped by Paswan," she said.

"Paswan made calls on the landline phone of Rinki Devi telling her to reach certain locations in Budh Vihar, Barwala and Badli if she wanted the child back," deputy commissioner of police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said.

However, technical surveillance of the phone revealed that the accused was in Khurji near Patna. A police team rushed to Bihar and Paswan was arrested from the house of his in-laws in Breta village of Samastipur district recently.

Police faced stiff resistance from villagers during his arrest, Sharma said.

During interrogation, Paswan told the police that he knew Rinki for the past four years and had an infatuation for her, he claimed

"He thought of a plan to first kidnap the child and later to convince Rinki Devi to stay with him as his second wife," Sharma said.
