A 28-year-old man committed suicide after he was denied entry in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) preliminary exam on Sunday as he was late by four minutes.

The man identified as Varun Subhash Chandran later returned to his rented accommodation in Rajendra Nagar and hung himself. The police have also recovered a suicide note from the room, in which Varun stated that he could not attempt the exam as he was late and also asked his parents to forget him as soon as possible. The body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem.

According to the police, the deceased Varun Chandran hailed from Karnataka. After completing his graduation, he moved to Delhi to prepare for the UPSC preliminary exams. Before shifting his residence to Old Rajender Nagar for coaching, he was staying at several other places in the National Capital. "The police was informed about the suicide at around 5:55pm. Varun was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his rented accommodation. The body was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and crime team was called at the spot. A suicide note was also recovered from his room," said Mandeep Randhawa, DCP, Central.

Varun had previously attempted the exam multiple times. On Sunday he went to appear for the UPSC preliminary exam at Sarvodya Bal Vidyalaya Kaseruwalan in Paharganj.

The suicide was discovered by one of his female friends. The girl, who was also preparing for the exam, finished it and called up Varun. When he failed to respond after repeated calls, she went to his residence and found the room locked from inside. Later the owners and neighbours were called in after which he was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
