A complete lockdown or an aggressive lockdown is needed in India just like last year, said AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria even as the country is grappling with a massive COVID-19 crisis. Dr Guleria stressed that a strict lockdown should be imposed in areas reporting positive rates over 10 per cent.

Dr Guleria said that India had been caught off guard by the ferocity with which the virus was spreading, and that night curfews and weekend lockdowns imposed by various states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana and other states have proved to be ineffectual. He was speaking on NDTV and added the death of a doctor in Delhi’s Batra hospital due to oxygen shortage was a personal loss for him. “That (the 12 deaths) drives home the point that India needs aggressive lockdown to contain the virus.”

Aggressive containment or lockdown is the only key as no healthcare system in the world can manage this kind of load.

Exactly a month ago, Dr Guleria had said that a "mini lockdown" is needed in the country to contain the rapid spread of the virus. The COVID situation in the country is worrisome and people are being negligent regarding the spread of the virus.

Dr Guleria said that the virus is rapidly spreading because of people's callousness and because of o social distancing. Children are also getting infected, however, their immunity is stronger than that of adults.

For complete vaccination, there is a requirement of 200 crore doses in the country.

India recorded 392,488 new cases in the previous 24 hours to push total cases to 19.56 million. So far, the virus has killed 215,542 people.
