Sporadic violence was reported during by-polls for Uluberia Lok Sabha Constituency and Noapara Assembly constituency in West Bengal on Monday. The by-elections were necessitated after the death of Uluberia TMC MP Sultan Ahmed and Noapara Congress MLA Madhusudan Ghose.

"Till the end of polling at 5 pm Uluberia Lok Sabha recorded 76.7% polling whereas Noapara recorded 75.3% The polling was completely peaceful," PTI reported quoting senior EC official.

The poll figure might go up as people were still standing outside a few booths to cast their vote, officials said. The results of the by-elections will be announced on February 1.

However many places reported reports of interference with the polling process.

At 7.45 am, at booth number 151 of Katakhali Primary School in Uluberia South assembly division, it was alleged that TMC agents did not allow Congress polling agents to enter the booth. At 7.50 am, at Amta Assembly sub-division, BJP polling agents were allegedly dragged out of booth numbers 82 and 83. Later, at booth number 40 of the same constituency, an outsider was allegedly standing near the EVM casting votes on others’ behalf.

BJP state secretary Sayantan Basu said, “There was rampant rigging. We have videos of the person casting votes on behalf of others. We have informed police but no action has been taken. It is a farce in the name of election,” he said. TMC leadership however promptly denied all allegations.

At 8.20 am, minor trouble broke out among workers of TMC, BJP and CPI(M) at Uluberia East assembly sub-division. At 8.30 am, poll process was suspended in two booths owing to malfunctioning Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). Similarly, at Amta  booth number 56, poll process was halted owing to EVM malfunctioning.

Congress leadership demanded a repoll at Noapara and put up a sit in demonstration at Barrackpore Administrative Building. It was also alleged that Central forces had not been put to proper use and many of the booths did not have any CRPF personnel.
