All India Institute of Medical Sciences, on Friday, signed a memorandum of understanding with the University College London to enable research collaborations and increase the number of academic and student exchange between the two institutions.

“Through closer collaboration and shared expertise, we will gain a deeper insight into our ground-breaking research and fulfill our joint ambition to address some of the biggest challenges facing society today. Furthering academic and student exchange programmes, will also enrich both UCL’s and AIIMS communities, enabling them to develop and grow intellectually, culturally and socially,” said Professor Michael Arthur, President, and Provost, UCL.

Gastroenterologists of both institutions have recently been awarded a research grant under the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) program for joint research on new prognostic markers for patients with acute or chronic liver failure.

Also, the Department of Endocrinology at AIIMS is presently working with collaborators at UCL to initiate a joint analysis of the UK National Paediatric Diabetes Audit and the Youth Onset Diabetes Registry (an ICMR funded registry).

As part of ongoing research collaborations, AIIMS has joined the new International Centre for Genomic Medicine in Neuromuscular Diseases (ICGMN), which is led by UCL. The ICGMN is a £5m initiative, bringing together skills and resources from five countries, and aims to advance the genetic diagnosis and therapy for patients with muscle wasting neuromuscular diseases, including motor neuron disease and muscular dystrophy.

“This collaboration is an immense opportunity for bilateral workflow on more than one aspect. It is also an opportunity for dialogue including an exchange of ideas, training, and empowerment for high-end bio-technological research. Our focus under this ‘Letter of Intent’ would be on training opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers at both institutes and establishment of a Clinical Trials Unit to further enhance these capabilities,” said Dr Randeep Galeria, Director, AIIMS.
