Kolkata police to enforce ‘no helmet, no fuel’ rule from December 8 to check fatalities

Nearly half of over 1.8 million vehicles registered in capital Kolkata in 2019 were two-wheelers.

In order to enforce wearing helmets, two-wheeler riders will not be given fuel at petrol pumps in Kolkata if caught not wearing a helmet. The rule will also be applicable to those pillion riders coming to the petrol pump without a helmet

According to Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma, the rule will be applicable in the city from December 8 to February 5. 

"No petrol pump within the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police shall henceforth sell petrol to any such two-wheeler rider who arrives at the petrol pump riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet as well as carries pillion rider without a helmet," read the order of the Kolkata police.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in an event spoke about giving helmets to those who cannot afford it.

"Wear a helmet and ride bikes. I am not like those governments that say you have to pay Rs 2,000 if you don`t wear a mask. I would rather request you all to wear a mask," said the CM.

"The government will give helmets to those who cannot afford it. One can report to their local police station and register their names, addresses. They will be given helmets," she further added.

Nearly half of over 1.8 million vehicles registered in Kolkata in 2019 were two-wheelers and the police registered around 93,855 cases of rash driving in the same year.
