A non-celeb named Sonali Singh has 1.5 million followers on WhatsApp Channels, higher than most cricketers, Bollywood celebs, and even IPL teams.
WhatsApp Channels, the new platform on the messaging app was recently launched. Channels is a one-way broadcast tool that public profiles, government figures, celebrities, and organisations can use to send text, photos, and everything else over WhatsApp. Within days, several celebs from India have joined Channels and some have amassed lakhs of followers too. But there is one name – a woman who is not a celeb – who has more followers than many cricketers, singers, Bollywood celebs, and even PM Narendra Modi.

Among Indian celebs, only Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar, Diljit Dosanjh, and Sunny Leone have over a million followers on the Channels platform. Following them, ahead of everybody else, is Sonali Singh, with a whopping 1.5 million followers. In comparison, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has just over 5 lakh followers, while Chennai Super Kings has even less. Even PM Narendra Modi and most major cricketers are way behind. So how does Sonali have these many followers? That is because she is the business manager of singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh.

However, despite that, Sonali’s following on WhatsApp Channels is unusually high, given that she has less than 50,000 followers on Instagram and fewer on other social media apps. On her WhatsApp broadcast, Sonali shares BTS pictures and videos from her time with Diljit as well as glimpses of her life. Sonali is active on her WhatsApp Channels feed and her posts routinely get over a thousand likes.

Globally, few stars have hopped on to the Channels bandwagon in the last week or so since its launch. WhatsApp’s own broadcast has the most followers with 11 million, followed by Real Madrid with 8.8 million and Netflix with 8.5 million. Madrid’s arch-rivals from La Liga are at number four with 6.8 million. Among celebs, rapper Bad Bunny leads with 5.4 million followers, followed by Katrina Kaif with 5.1 million, the highest among Indians.
