The first thing we have to realise is that rape is not a sexual crime. It is a violent crime intended to destroy a person. What aspect of the Delhi rape case was sexual? It was so brutal and violent that it ended up killing a person. This is not to be viewed as one isolated incident of rape, and we cannot let this be the end.
The main concern is nobody influential or in a position of power is willing to accept the problem and deal with the root cause. They talk about exercising stringent measures, the need for more policemen but the issue is much deeper than that. We are not a society of equals. As a culture, Indian women are viewed as inferior. Things have to change at the basic level, which involves education and gender sensitisation.
I am so disturbed that I want to help but am still figuring out how. The other day, when I was watching youngsters facing lathis and tear gas on TV, my heart told me to go to Delhi to stand with them. But I had to restrain myself because the minute I turn up, it’ll be viewed as a publicity stunt. I can only help by initiating and joining conversations against such ghastly crimes. There is a small part we play in public service with comments we make.
While women are feeling outraged, it is men who need to stand up and say this is not the way men behave. What a man does is stand up and defend a woman, come what may.
I also think that politicians passing the blame on films when it comes to crimes is mere trivialisation. They make it about women wearing make-up and revealing clothes, about the influence of films and music. Talking about item numbers, there are as many men as women baring their bodies. It is all about changing the mindset and it has to start now.
