The actor feels doing non-glamorous roles gives a lot of meat to the character.
It is a Bollywood trend that actor Delnaz Paul wants to implement on the stage. She will be seen sans make- up and sans glamorous clothing, choosing colours that will underplay her character on stage. The actor will be sporting a “rustic” look, with oiled hair plaited into braids, loose fitting clothes and a bucolic demeanour in her new play titled Kuwaro Lakhno Parnelo Sawa Lakhno. The actor also admits that after a long span of 11 years, she is making a comeback on the stage.
Says Delnaz, “I have been away for 11 years. Director Umeah Shukla offered me this super-amazing script. He is one of the brightest directors on the Gujarati stage now. It is a fun play with a definite message. Though the audience wants to laugh, they must take back something home to think about.”
Delnaz also admits that she is open to the current trend in Bollywood to go de-glam for a role. She points out, “It certainly looks like it adds meat to the character. It gives you a lot of scope to prove yourself as an actor. When I was doing plays earlier, I have often had to stand on the stage like a flower pot. There is a lot of money on the stage today. Each play has almost 25 stagings in a month. With variety in scripts and a whole lot of discipline among actors, the stage is a great place for actors today.”
Delnaz also adds that the rigorous discipline that is maintained on the stage has often put her in tight positions. She admits, “I can never bunk any more during the rehearsals. Even if I have a genuine problem, I have to give a long explanation to my director.”
Going totally de-glam for her character on stage has been a big challenge, says Delnaz. She says, “Yes, it was a big challenge. Though I am a little overweight, I make sure I am always well turned out.
However, there is a little surprise at the end of the play which I will not disclose.” We wonder if Delnaz’s character will do an Ugly Betty for this one!
