On December 28, Vijay also known as Thalapathy Vijay attended the funeral of his mentor Vijaykanth. As Vijay made his way through a sea of excited cameramen and reporters, to his car after paying his last respects, he was hit by a slipper from an unidentified person and the video has now enraged the fans. 

Thalapathy Vijay recently attended the funeral of the veteran Tamil actor and politician who passed away due to prolonged illness. As he made his way to where Vijaykanth's body was laid, surrounded by his family, the actor looked visibly emotional and heartbroken. He talked to Vijaykanth's family and touched his glass coffin and when he was heading back to his car, a slipper was flung at him. His security caught it and threw it back. 

Thalapathy Vijay's fans and other netizens were angered by the misbehavior of the mob. One of the tweets read, "This is wrong." Another fan tweeted, "He’s unable to even pay homage properly. Can understand fans' love but this is not the right time guys, the price the celebrities have to pay." Another tweet read, "OMG...#Captain fans are so aggressive...didn't knew this..Why???" Another fan wrote, "There is a place and time for everything..All celeb fans have to show restraint and dignity when their idols come to pay their respects." Another person tweeted, "As a Thalaivar Fan, I am very disappointed at the footwear thrown at Mr.Vijay in #Captain's funeral meet. Vj fans are degenerates, if there is one foolish asshole in a family, that one would be a vj fan. But IMO vj shouldn't be facing the repercussions for their deed online." 

 The founder-leader of DMDK and a well-known Tamil actor Vijayakanth breathed his last at the age of 71 in Chennai on Thursday after a prolonged illness. According to his party's statement, he tested positive for Covid-19 and was placed on ventilator support. However, according to the hospital, in which he was admitted, MIOT International, he had pneumonia. The hospital's statement read, "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023."
