Can you imagine a Shah Rukh Khan film without an over-the-top song-and-dance sequence? And that too in a Karan Johar film! Well, Karan is set to do something different in his forthcoming venture My Name is Khan that has SRK in the lead paired opposite Kajol. This time around, neither will SRK lip-sync to any of the songs nor will he dance to them. All the songs are being used by Karan in the background as a tool to move the narrative forward.

“The film doesn’t have the conventional Shah Rukh song-and-dance moment. He doesn’t raise his hands up in the air and break into a jig. For me, personally, having no elaborate and extravagant dance routine is quite a contrast to what people have seen in my movies but I assure you there are songs in the film and they are beautiful and earthy. The compositions are by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy (SEL) and the songs have amazing texture and melody that Indian songs are meant to have,” Karan reveals to DNA.

“The songs are all in the background, buried into the narrative and they only take the plot forward. This makes the film have a different technique of storytelling too. It’s an experiment which we are hopeful people will love though they won’t see SRK sing and dance for them.”

Karan informs us that while composing the songs, he along with SEL remembered to keep the melody of Indian songs intact though the setting of the story was in the US.

“I gave personal attention to all the songs in the film and sat with SEL. We came to the conclusion that the melody of Indian songs must be kept for this movie although its plot is set in the US. We were all very keen to make the songs very Indian; no western instruments have been used for the songs all of which have a slant towards Sufi music. The songs have reverence and spirituality, and the melody is very Raj Kapoor-ish in its approach. My Name is Khan’s album has both heart and soul. It narrates a love story and the songs really deepen the mood,” ends Karan.
