He’s always quoted lines from Ayn Rand’s Fountain Head and has considered himself to be a victim of the society much like Rand’s protagonist Howard Roark.

Film-maker Ram Gopal Varma is now out there fighting for someone else who he believes is facing the unwanted wrath of people. He’s leaving no opportunity wasted to voice his sentiments on supporting Maria Susairaj, after she is out following the Neeraj Grover murder case.

“My basic problem is the fact that people who’re raising all these protest rallies and candle light marches have half-baked information. They are following the herd mentality and just parroting what everyone else is saying,” points out Varma, who is seemingly livid at the way people seem to be cornering Susairaj.

He adds, “I’d say give Maria a chance. She’s being asked to say something and even before she opens her mouth, you have people contradicting her. It is complete double standards that we are seeing in the country. Who’d know the proceedings in this case better than the judge who’s given his verdict?”

Varma even tries to reason it out using the supremacy of the judiciary in this case. “If the court has passed a verdict already, shouldn’t we respect that rather than question it? This is complete contempt of court,” says he, who still believes that there’s nothing wrong in offering Susairaj a role in his film, especially since she has served her punishment.

“She was found guilty for a certain reason, she finished serving her punishment. Why make a further hue and cry? I’m just offering her a role since she’s an actor and I am a director. There’s nothing wrong in that, is there?” asks Varma, who has also registered a complaint against political activists who have threatened him.

But, an unperturbed Varma only says, “People have threatened me time and again because I have bothered to open my mouth and comment on various things that others have refrained from even looking at. We all need to take a stand. I’m not scared of anyone nor will I change my beliefs because of that.”
